A Quantitative Study on the Change of Plasma Level of the Carbohydrate-Protein Complex in the Several Diseases of Otolaryngology.

Abstract
Conjugated Proteins containing a complex carbohydrate moiety are referred to as glycoproteins and mucoproteins.
The plasma glycoproteins are largely classified as seromucoids and pon-sermucoids, although there are still argument in it¢¥s classification.
A large number of glycoproteins, showing variable composition and thus representing variable properties are introduced by several authors.
The normal serum amounts of glycoproteins are variable according to reported authors. This variability seems to be introduced by different estimating methods and populations. To estimate representative amounts of seromucoids and non-seromucoids, the author selected Winzler¢¥s method and phenol-sulfuric method, . respetcively.
The estimation of plasma seromucoids and protein-bound-carbohydrate level in the patients suffering from inframmatory diseases and cancers of otolaryngology fields were seems to be helpful to differentiate its duration, location and severities.
The author collected the blood from 30 control group and 228 patients who visited Dept. of Otolaryngology, College of Medicine, Chung Ang University and Cancer Research Hospital.
The 228 patients were diagnosed as rhinitis (60 cases), paranasal sinusitis (66 cases), tonsillitis (54 cases), chronic otitis media (18 cases), and cancers (30 cases) by the clinical view-points. The following results were obtained.
1. Estimated amounts (mg/100ml) of seromucoid and protein-bound-carbohydrate values were the highest level in the plasma of patients with cancers in otolaryngology fields. Its values were 182.3¡¾27.65mg/100mg, 209.2¡¾38.34mg/100ml, respectively.
2. Estimated amounts (mg/100ml) of seromucoid were the highest level in the plasma of patients with acute paranasal sinusitis except patients with cancers of otolaryngology fields.
3. In the acute inflammation groups, estimated levels of seromucoid and protein -bound-carbohydrate were higher than the chronic inflammation groups, in general.
4. When inflammation were classified with acute, chronic and/or specific lesions, estimated amounts of prot. en i n-bound -carbohydrate in the plasma were not meaningful, but amounts of seromucoid were changed meaningfully.
